UNPPPI Statement in Support of the University of Windsor Agreement

Last updated on January 6th, 2025

On July 19, 2024, UNJPPI issued a statement in support of the University of Windsor’s Agreement ending their Student Encampment; praising and congratulating both the University of Windsor and the student encampment participants.

Excerpt:

…The scale of the on-going death and destruction in Gaza is heart-breaking. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (‘OCHA’) issues regular reports on conditions there. Its July 10th Reported Impact Snapshot provides a snapshot of present conditions – including numbers killed, injured, and facing catastrophic food insecurity; damage to homes, commercial facilities, hospitals and schools. However, in some respects even those horrendous numbers give an incomplete picture of the scale of the human tragedy.[]…

Not surprisingly, many Canadians are angry at what is happening in Gaza. We want the killing and destruction to stop. We do not want our government or other Canadian institutions to be contributing in any way to that death and destruction. The agreement signed at the University of Windsor contains provisions responsive to these concerns, including in relation to the University’s Responsible Investment Policy and its academic and research relationships. The agreement also contains provisions addressing other human rights issues, particularly with respect to Palestinian and Muslim students, present and future.

UNJPPI supports non-violent actions to end the ongoing Israeli military assault on Gaza and the extreme suffering being experienced by the people of Gaza. We commend the University of Windsor and the encampment  representatives on their agreement and encourage everyone to respect and support the result of their negotiations.
