Letter to Ahmed Hussen re UNWRA Funding and Arms Sales to Israel

Last updated on January 6th, 2025

On Mar 12, 2024, UNJPPI wrote a letter to The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development and the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs
with the subject: Funds to UNRWA and Weapon Sales/Purchases to/from Israel

Excerpt:

…We cannot help but be struck by the similarities between what happened after the January 26th Israel government claims, to what happened in October/ November 2021 when Israel Defense Minister Ganz and then the Israeli army’s central command declared 6 Palestinian human rights organizations to be terrorist organizations. The declarations seriously affected the important work of the organizations when many countries immediately cut funding to them. It was many months before the funding was slowly reinstated after Israel failed to share sufficient evidence to support the terrorist designations. We wrote to Minister Joly at the time.

Given that experience, we would appreciate an explanation as to why Canada would again suspend funding to UNRWA before receiving any justifying evidence from Israel?…

As members and friends of The United Church of Canada we join with Project Ploughshares in calling for Canada: to end the supply of military goods to Israel, as per its obligations under the Export and Import Permits Act and the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The ever-growing demonstrations in Canadian streets and at events where members of the Canadian government are appearing are signs that Canadians are distressed by what is happening in Gaza and Canada’s failure to take effective action to end it. They too will support the Project Ploughshares call.
