Letter to Mélanie Joly re Trade Sanctions Needed
On July 9, 2024, UNJPPI wrote a letter to The Honourable Minister Mélanie Joly, P.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs, about the “Need for Strong Sanctions on Israel in Response to its Ongoing War Crimes”

… The multiple announcements suggests that it is very unlikely that Israel will stop its expelling Palestinians from their West Bank lands, and its construction of residences for illegal Israeli settlers on Palestinian lands, all in violation of international humanitarian law and constituting war crimes, simply because some diplomats make that demand of them. By the Supreme Court of Canada decision in Nevsun Resources Ltd. v Araya, these population transfers also violate Canadian law.
What will Canada do if Israel does not promptly stop displacing Palestinians from their lands and stop the construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem of residences and other uses for illegal Israeli settlers?
We urge you to immediately take the following actions,
1. Implement a total two-way arms embargo on Israel, and cancel every already-issued permit for the shipment of arms to Israel or the import of arms from Israel,
2. Impose sanctions on Israeli Minister Smotrich, and any other Israeli Minister or official facilitating the seizure of Palestinian lands in the West Bank or East Jerusalem and their allocation for Israeli settlers housing or other uses.3. Immediately terminate the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, as it makes no distinction between products produced in Israel proper and those produced in the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights…
